Monday night’s industry panel was insightful, raw and honest, and we opened up a can of worms.

Starting a fashion business in our competitive industry is tough, and there’s no ‘easy’ way to do it. What we’ve worked out though, is that a mentor, the right connections, and a supportive network can make it much more enjoyable. When you’ve built your foundations and have the support you need, you can focus on what you love doing.

Julie Goodwin knows the scenario all too well. She’s the Designer and Director behind her namesake label, Julie Goodwin Couture, and although she’s one of Melbourne’s most loved couturiers, building her own business hasn’t come without struggles.

As one of our panellists on Monday night, Julie is an authority in the fashion industry and she knows what she’s talking about.

“Without an idea of what you are aiming for, and what success looks like in terms of goals, you have no way to measure your progress. To achieve your goals, or head towards them, you need a plan, you need a strategy. A business strategy gives you direction, and makes you accountable. Without it, you don’t have a business, you have a (very expensive) hobby.”
